The ACLU is moving on a large established commitment to Smart Justice – this is an unprecedented multi-year effort to eliminate racial discrimination in the legal system, and reduce the jail and prison population by 50%.
Awareness of legal system problems is at new levels. Bi-partisan support for improvement options is growing around the country, including Michigan.
Michigan is acknowledged to have at least its share of criminal and social justice delivery problems, and the ACLU of Michigan is moving aggressively, in lock-step with the national Smart Justice effort.
Rodd Monts provided an excellent overview of status and plans and objectives, especially as applied to Michigan; Rodd made the justice topic personal. The intimate gathering was well-engaged, with everyone showing passion. All learned and new commitments were expressed.
