The wolves were at the door, and too many ignored the warnings. Now with the 2024 election, the wolves burst through the door. The new America is still coming, even though it now requires more work, under greater urgency, with more trust in God.
Change is constant and natural. But now change is more rapid and drastic, and the stakes are over-the-top. An assault on democracy is happening the whole world over. In America, Christian nationalism turned the assault against Jesus and His teachings. A major “turning of the page” is upon us. So, let’s admit there will be a new America, and let it not be tyranny (or call it autocracy or fascism). Christian nationalism, a floundering Christianity, was key to letting the wolves in, but they will not win.
We must work to make American faith and democracy what we want, need, and deserve. We must take a stand as a country of authentic faith and vibrant democracy. Common people need to help shape the change through our hope, determination, and prayers. Thinking caring people, true Christians and champions of democracy, know we can do better. In this time, through God’s grace, we will restore America.
We must work as one for the good of all
We all have hope, and hope matters, so bring it. Plus, a significant majority of us have determination to make democracy work again. This means we care and will work for a new America. In fact, everybody can influence the “new and improved” America. We need to choose to see the possibilities and to work together, to design and build it, as God would have it.
Your opportunity is America’s opportunity. If we do not work with purpose to save American democracy, it can be stripped away altogether, where evil can rule for a while. A fierce ruling minority is working hard to fully hand the country over to tyranny. They successfully used Christian nationalism as a political tool, but their dark success will not carry on.
For the sake of America, for life and well-being as we desire, people need to come together and harness the power of righteous change. This goal of this article is to help the public see the possibilities.
Keys to the new America
Our strongest defense against autocracy is an informed public. Autocracy works hard to divide people, and we have seen the division growing in our congress and courts. So, please do not think it too assuming if words like ‘our’ or ‘we’ are used. This is a sincere attempt to bring people together. Democracy is still the way to unify people and give them power.
America has never been on the sideline of the world, and she will not be in the future. America has been the bright shining city on the hill, guiding the way by democracy. We must return to the tenants that define a democracy, modernizing and implementing them better. This still includes separation of church and state.
Democracy is the main assumption and starting point to make the change. Democracy has not failed America; American politicians and their greedy masters have failed democracy. Morals and leadership are missing and greatly needed.
Helping shape and make the change (or at least understand and support it!)
Of course, change can be good or not so good. America needs change that cannot be left to chance or negative influences. We (the people of America) have an opportunity and a responsibility to shape the change. It will not be easy; positive change will not happen by accident. So, let us see change as opportunity.
There has always been this claim that we can be made stronger by working through the challenges of the day; it is the idea that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. America can return as the best example of democracy. We can be better than ever, where people are secure with a reasonable quality of life, as good world citizens.
There are many like-minded people and organizations working to preserve and improve our democratic republic, the new America. In fact, liberal democracy supporters need a well-defined single coalition or initiative behind which we the people can coalesce. Democratic causes and the Christian faith are suffering from divide and conquer.
Please share any ideas or insights on how we might “get all the wood behind one arrow”. While not calling for a revolution, the job requires more than “business as usual”. For example, the necessary change likely will not come through the political parties as they currently exist and operate.
Big rocks in the way of American democacy and Christianity must be worked first (and hard!)
If you agree that America has big basic problems, then it is necessary to be clear about what they are. Powerful organizations like the Brookings Institute call out many threats to democracy, which are important and a good way to learn.
There are many lists of the big rocks in the way of American progress. And any of these lists should be calling out Christian nationalism. If we still had clear separation of church and state, this would not have been such a problem. As it is, Christian nationalists were manipulated to tip the election balance to the tyrants. In a fifty-fifty electorate, hard-working Christians of authentic faith can just as easily tip it back the other way.
America’s action plan must root the big rocks out and get rid of them. Work hard now going forward, so all the other important things will have a chance.
In the New America, authentic faith and vibrant democracy will prevail
America has always been a Christian dominated country, which is okay. But Christianity is distinct from democracy, which is good for the both of them. Christianity and democracy are complementary but distinct – you can find this in the Constitution and in the Bible.
In the election just passed, Christian nationalism was used on behalf of tyranny. But the true Christian American spirit will prevail. The country can only go up from here if the people can come together and work for the common good. That is what Christianity and democracy are all about.
